Alex Holmgren-Community Coach
I was born in Kansas City, MO and moved to Southwest Florida when I was 9. My Bachelor of Arts degree is from Auburn University in Russian Studies and Political Science. I later earned a Master of Science Degree from Kennesaw State University in Conflict Management. I am registered with the state of Georgia as a mediator.
My running career began as a high school senior while conditioning for the basketball team. I joined the team mid-way through the season and quickly worked my way into the top-5. I developed my love of the sport during my short time running HS XC.
I walked-on to the Auburn University XC team during the 1992 season and participated in XC, indoor, and outdoor track, specializing in the distance events including the 3000m steeplechase. I eventually left the team in 1994 to focus on my degree. My head coach was Olympian Harvey Glance (now at Alabama) and my distance coach was Kelly Sullivan (now at Oregon State).
I rejoined the running community in 2001 and completed the GHSA requirements to become a community coach at Kennesaw Mountain HS in cross country and track. I originally started coaching to work with my brother-in-law Elliott Smith, who would later go on to run at Auburn. I have coached cross country at Kennesaw Mountain HS for 7 years and the distance runners in track for 6 years.
My wife’s name is Meredith, a math teacher who has been an assistant coach for Harrison cross country since 2001. We have two sons, 5 and 1. I have worked at Masco Contractor Services since 1997 serving as an estimator, production manager, and safety coordinator. I am the founder and President of RunCobb.org, and a partner of Dynamic Surgical Consultants.
